5 Steps That Homeowners Can Follow during a No Heat Emergency:
Michigan’s cold season can be extreme. If you suffer a no-heat emergency, these steps may be able to help you troubleshoot the problem–if you are comfortable doing so. Be sure to call Vredevoogd Heating & Cooling if you suffer a no-heat emergency night or day. We’re here to help during these stressful events.
Step 1
First, homeowners should check their thermostat. A family member or child may have inadvertently switched off the heat. All modern thermostats will have an on/off switch. However, the switch isn’t always clearly labeled. Make sure that your thermostat is switched to “heat.” If the switch is correctly set to heat or the heat does not come on when switched, there could be a problem with the thermostat’s replaceable battery if it has one. You’ll need to check this battery. If there is no battery, you’ll need to proceed to other steps or contact Vredevoogd Heating & Cooling.
Step 2
If you have switched your thermostat to heat and it still does not kick on, be sure to look for an on/off switch on the furnace. Someone may have flicked the switch to the off position. If you have central air and only recently tried to fire up the heat after running the air, this furnace switch is most likely switched on and there is another problem at hand.
Step 3
After going through steps and one and two with no success, check the breakers in your electrical panel. If the breaker tripped, your solution could be as simple as flipping the breaker switch. A tripped breaker could prevent your furnace from functioning.
Step 4
If none of the switches are at the root of the problem, you may have trouble with your furnace’s front cover. The open cover can trip a switch that effectively shuts down the system. Be sure that the furnace’s cover is properly closed to correct the problem.
Step 5
If your furnace turns on, but you don’t feel hot air, it could indicate that your furnace is not getting any gas. Your pilot light may not be lit as well. Check your gas line to make sure that the valve is switched to the on position. When the valve is in the on position, its lever should run parallel to the gas line. If the handle is in a perpendicular position, your gas valve is in the off position.
Finally, double check that you have paid your gas bill or that you have propane in your tank.
